Family Calls for UK Action Amid Iranian Detention of British Couple
The British government is being urged to intensify efforts to secure the release of Lindsay and Craig Foreman, a couple currently detained in Iran under espionage charges they deny. Their son, Joe Bennett, has highlighted the dire living conditions they are facing and called for a stronger governmental response as the couple approaches spending Christmas away from family.
Detention Details
Lindsay and Craig Foreman, who hail from East Sussex, were apprehended in Kerman during a global motorcycle tour in January. Following their arrest, they were charged with espionage, allegations which they firmly reject. In October, the couple was moved to the notorious Evin Prison in Tehran, where they are expected to remain over the festive season.
Conditions in Prison
Joe Bennett, who has been in regular contact with his mother, reported that the couple is suffering significant health issues due to inadequate food and unsanitary conditions within the prison. According to Bennett, the couple is surviving on substandard meals of rice and gristle, which, compounded by overcrowding, has led to notable weight loss and other health concerns.
“The environment is extremely dirty; they are battling a kitchen infested with rats,” he explained. “The conditions are dire, and my mother’s health is worsening due to the lack of proper facilities,” he added, noting the emotional toll of their absence as Christmas approaches.
Frustration with Government Response
Bennett expressed frustration over the UK government’s perceived inaction, describing the judicial proceedings in Iran as a “complete circus.” He criticized the government’s lack of clear communication and called for accountability, particularly given the serious nature of the allegations against his parents.
“This is not a case of a minor offence but something serious that carries state-level charges,” he stated. He urges the UK authorities to take a clear stance against the accusations and work more assertively towards securing the safe return of his parents.
Official Government Position
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has publicly acknowledged the situation, stating that they are deeply concerned about the charges against the Foremans. They have committed to providing consular support and are maintaining close contact with the couple’s family, reiterating their efforts to address the matter directly with Iranian officials.
Moreover, the FCDO has issued a travel warning for British and British-Iranian nationals, advising against all travel to Iran due to a significant risk of arbitrary arrest and detention.
