Coach Removed from Children’s Football League Over Drug Allegations
A Belfast football club has swiftly taken action to dismiss a coach after he allegedly shared a drugs price list in a group chat with peers from nearly 300 grassroots clubs. The club announced the immediate removal of the coach, who was responsible for training under-eights, following significant backlash from the incident.
Incident Details
The coach reportedly posted an image containing what appeared to be a menu pricing drugs, complete with details on meeting locations and a warning to “time wasters” that they would be blocked. This message was deleted shortly after it was shared.
It has been confirmed that the WhatsApp group involved comprises approximately 400 coaches associated with various teams, aimed at coordinating match fixtures by navigating the logistics of scheduling games. Importantly, there were no children present in this group chat.
Reaction from the Club
In a statement released on social media, the Belfast club declared that the coach had been “permanently removed with immediate effect.” It emphasised that such behaviour is “completely unacceptable” within its ranks and expressed deep shock over the incident.
The club reassured the public that all necessary vetting protocols had been adhered to, in alignment with guidelines set by the Irish Football Association (IFA). They also asserted their commitment to prioritising the welfare of their players and expressed their intention to address the matter with the utmost seriousness.
League’s Response and Expectations
The FonaCab Development League, which encompasses around 300 clubs across Northern Ireland, confirmed the immediate termination of the coach’s involvement with the league and notified the club accordingly. They have engaged the relevant safeguarding staff to review the situation.
While acknowledging the limitations in monitoring every message exchanged between coaches organising matches, the league reiterated its clear expectations regarding behaviour. They emphasised their duty to safeguard children’s well-being and uphold the foundational values of the league.
In their statement, they stated, “Our responsibility is to protect the wellbeing of every child and uphold the values the League is built on.” Furthermore, they expressed gratitude towards the majority of coaches who consistently adhere to these standards.
Background
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by grassroots sports organisations in ensuring a safe environment for children.
