Neighbours banded together to rescue survivors and, tragically, to carry the deceased to safety. Mohamed Fairoos, one of the local volunteers, reported that he transported nine bodies in total, lamenting the insufficient aid received from authorities.
“No one called for us. No one helped us,” Fairoos said, highlighting the community’s sense of abandonment.

Amid the clear devastation, heartbreaking stories emerged. One volunteer recounted the tragic loss of a family of five, who had sought refuge from landslides in a friend’s home, only to be engulfed by flooding. Friends described the family—comprising parents and their two daughters and son—as popular and well-liked, a grim reminder of the cyclone’s extensive toll.
Survivors Face an Uncertain Future
Just a short distance away, Chamilaka Dilrukshi is mourning the loss of her photography business, which has been devastated by floodwaters. With her husband, she faces an uncertain future, holding onto a single bag of donated rice as their sole food supply. Their business, once thriving, now lies in ruin, their equipment damaged, and savings depleted.
“We don’t have a single rupee to start our business again,” Chamilaka lamented, expressing anger over the lack of warning about the impending cyclone.
Government Response and Public Outcry
In the wake of the disaster, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake declared a state of emergency and international aid has begun to arrive. However, many residents are voicing their anger over what they perceive as government failings. Criticisms abound regarding the government’s inadequate response to meteorological warnings issued weeks ahead of the cyclone and insufficient communication, particularly in the Tamil language.
