New Environmental Permit Proposed for Dairy Crest Ltd to Boost Production
The Environment Agency has introduced a draft permit aimed at enhancing environmental standards at Dairy Crest Ltd, now operating as Saputo Dairy UK. The proposal, currently open for public consultation, will facilitate an expansion in cheese production while implementing stricter environmental controls.
Public Consultation Launched
The Environment Agency has initiated a consultation process, inviting the community and interested stakeholders to provide feedback on the proposed permit until 13th February 2026. This move is part of an ongoing effort to address past environmental challenges at the site, including issues related to water pollution, noise, and odour, particularly noted in the 2024-25 Chief Regulator’s report.
Permit Details
The proposed permit variation will enable the creamery to enhance cheese manufacturing processes while discontinuing its demineralised whey production. Notably, it introduces new emissions limits and more rigorous monitoring practices for wastewater discharged into the River Inny, a tributary connected to the River Tamar.
Additionally, the draft permit formalises measures to mitigate noise and odour issues associated with the site, which have previously raised concerns among local residents.
Environmental Safeguards and Economic Growth
Chris James, the Environment Agency’s industry regulation team leader, emphasised the initiative’s dual aim: promoting environmental improvements while allowing the company to expand its operations. The agency’s review seeks to minimise the creamery’s ecological impact and safeguard the surrounding environment.
Should the permit meet all legal requirements under environmental legislation, including not causing harm to human health or the environment, the agency is mandated to issue the permit.
