Two Arrested for Illegal Waste Dumping in Multiple Locations
Authorities have apprehended two suspects from Essex for their alleged involvement in the illegal disposal of waste at several sites across Warwickshire, Derbyshire, and Buckinghamshire. The Environment Agency made this announcement on Friday, 6 January, following a collaborative operation.
Details of the Arrest
In a combined effort with the Eastern Regional Special Operations Unit (ERSOU), officers executed a raid on Thursday, 5 January, leading to the arrest of a 54-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman. Both individuals are residents of Essex.
After being questioned, the suspects were released pending ongoing investigations. The information and evidence obtained during the arrests will contribute to future legal actions against them.
Ongoing Investigation into Waste Crime
This operation is part of a broader investigation into various crimes related to waste management, including fraud and money laundering. Previous efforts have already resulted in the arrest of seven individuals across different parts of England, including recent arrests in Manchester.
Statements from Officials
Emma Viner, the Enforcement and Investigations Manager at the Environment Agency, stated, “Waste crime is completely unacceptable, and we are clear that those responsible will be pursued. Acting with the Eastern Regional Special Operations Unit, we have worked tirelessly to secure two more arrests in this complex investigation and to help bring an end to disgraceful criminal activity.”
Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds highlighted the urgency of the matter, saying, “With five waste crime arrests in just seven days, we’ve shown that those responsible for these appalling crimes will be tracked down and held to account. This is just part of the action we’re taking to stamp out this type of criminality across the country, including boosting funds, hiring more officers, and enforcing stricter penalties for offenders.”
Preventative Measures and Resources
In a bid to enhance the fight against financial crime related to waste management, the Environment Agency unveiled a new Economic Crime Unit in 2024. The goal of this unit is to strengthen efforts against money laundering and to ensure proper compliance within the sector.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any information that may aid this investigation by calling the Environment Agency’s 24-hour hotline at 0800 807060. They can also report anonymously through Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555111 or visiting the Crimestoppers website.
