Government Urges Public to Support Local Businesses This Small Business Saturday
The UK government is encouraging citizens to come together and shop locally in celebration of Small Business Saturday on 6 December. This initiative aims to uplift the nation’s 5.7 million small businesses, which play a vital role in the economy, especially during the festive season.
Significance of Small Businesses in the UK Economy
Small enterprises are crucial to the UK’s economic landscape, employing around 60% of the workforce and generating an impressive £2.8 trillion in annual turnover. Recent studies suggest that increased patronage of these businesses during the holiday season could lead to a boost of £5 billion for the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with consumer spending anticipated to rise by 19% compared to the previous year.
New Campaign Launch: Backing Your Business
The government has unveiled a new initiative called “Backing Your Business,” which seeks to provide essential support and resources for small enterprises, inclusive of sole traders, start-ups, and family-run shops. This campaign follows the introduction of the Small Business Plan, which outlines comprehensive reforms to address late payments—considered the most significant changes in a quarter of a century.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle’s Remarks
In a statement, Business Secretary Peter Kyle praised the UK’s entrepreneurial spirit, stating, “This country is home to some of the brightest entrepreneurs and innovative businesses in the world. Our Small Business Plan is a key driver to accelerating that potential.” He emphasized the importance of visiting local high streets and supporting small businesses, which contribute significantly to community welfare and the economy.
Voices from the Small Business Community
Michelle Ovens CBE, Director of Small Business Saturday UK, underscored the essential role of small businesses in local communities and the economy. According to research conducted in collaboration with American Express, an overwhelming 95% of respondents expressed that small businesses add significant value to their local areas, while 84% felt it is imperative for the nation to support them proactively this season.
Impact of Potential Growth
If small businesses across the UK manage a modest annual growth of just 1 percentage point, it could inject an additional £320 billion into the economy by 2030. The government is taking several measures to enhance support for small businesses, including:
- Implementing the strongest reforms to combat late payments in 25 years.
- Providing financial relief by reducing energy bills, freezing rail fares, and lowering prescription charges.
- Adjusting national insurance contributions to lessen the burden on small enterprises.
- Reducing electricity costs for numerous manufacturing businesses.
- Offering free training for apprentices under 25 years for small businesses.
- Supporting working parents with substantial childcare incentives.
- Capping business rate increases with a £4.3 billion financial package.
- Doubling eligibility for enterprise tax incentives to facilitate growth.
- Minimising bureaucratic hurdles to enable outdoor dining expansions in hospitality venues.
Previous Initiatives and Looking Ahead
Earlier this year, the government rolled out the Small Business Plan alongside the Business Growth Service. This included a financial support package of £4 billion, with £1 billion earmarked specifically for start-ups offering 69,000 Start-Up Loans and mentoring assistance.
The government has engaged with businesses regarding late payment issues and plans to release further details on their consultations early next year.
