The accident occurred in a mountainous region known as Cumbre de Alaska, situated in the Totonicapan department. The bus was en route from Guatemala City to Totonicapan when it lost control, tumbling approximately 100 meters (330 feet) into the ravine.

Emergency teams worked tirelessly for over two hours to assist the injured and recover the bodies of those who lost their lives. Authorities also engaged in clearing the wreckage, which resulted in temporary traffic disruptions on the busy highway.

President Arevalo took to social media to express his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. “I deeply regret the tragedy that occurred on the Inter-American Highway,” he stated. According to the National Transit Safety Observatory, there were 446 accidents involving public transport vehicles reported between January and October 2025, resulting in 111 fatalities and 623 injuries.
