Unknown Gurkha Soldier Honoured with Military Burial in Italy
An unidentified soldier, believed to be a member of the Gurkha units from the Indian Army, was laid to rest with full military honours in Arezzo War Cemetery, Italy. Discovered in a trench in the Alpe di Catenaia forest near Subbiano, the soldier’s burial marks a solemn remembrance of the contributions of the Gurkhas during the Second World War.
Discovery and Identification
The soldier’s remains were uncovered during research conducted by the Ministry of Defence’s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC), often referred to as the ‘MOD War Detectives’. Based on historical war diaries, it is believed he fought in significant engagements during early August 1944, likely as part of the 20th Brigade of the 10th Indian Infantry Division. Although attempts to determine his identity through DNA analysis were made, the condition of the remains did not permit a conclusive outcome.
Tracey Bowers, a MOD War Detective, expressed the honour of collaborating with the Gurkha Allied Rapid Reaction Corps Support Battalion for the service, highlighting the often-overlooked role of the Gurkhas in Italy during the conflict. She stated that while the soldier remains unnamed, his sacrifice has now been respected through a full military burial.
Historical Context
Following the Allied victory in Sicily in late 1943, Allied forces aimed to penetrate the Gothic Line, the final major German defence line during the Italian Campaign. By summer 1944, as Allied troops advanced, they faced crucial challenges in mountainous territory that was difficult to navigate but strategically significant. The Gurkhas were pivotal in these efforts, renowned for their ability to fight in such challenging landscapes, resulting in commendable bravery and substantial sacrifices, earning them two Victoria Crosses during the war.
The Burial Ceremony
The burial service was conducted by Reverend Timothy Watts, who remarked on the growing importance of honouring fallen soldiers. He reflected on the broader sacrifices made by military personnel from around the globe. Claudia Scimonelli, Country Manager for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in Italy, noted the rarity of reburials of Commonwealth soldiers in Italy, making the ceremony particularly poignant.
Captain Tej Bahadur Gurung from the Royal Gurkha Rifles expressed his honour in participating in the burial, acknowledging the lasting legacy of courage associated with the Gurkha spirit.
A Final Resting Place
The soldier’s grave will be maintained at Arezzo War Cemetery, ensuring he is commemorated alongside his colleagues, preserving his memory for future generations.
