HMRC Customers Can Now Register via GOV.UK One Login
From 9 February 2026 onwards, new users of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) digital services can register using the GOV.UK One Login system. This update simplifies the sign-up process by allowing individuals to use just an email address and password instead of a lengthy identification number.
Enhanced Accessibility
The introduction of GOV.UK One Login marks a significant shift towards a more streamlined experience for users seeking access to various government services. When fully implemented, this login will serve as a unified point of entry for over 200 government services, including tax, passport applications, and voter registration. By consolidating access into a single secure login, the government aims to enhance convenience while ensuring users’ security and data protection.
Gradual Rollout and Current Users
The transition for HMRC customers will be carried out gradually, with ongoing monitoring to ensure a smooth migration. Existing HMRC users who hold a Government Gateway account will not need to take any immediate action; they will continue to use their current credentials until notified about switching to the new system. Furthermore, those who possess a GOV.UK One Login for other government services will still need to use their Government Gateway account for HMRC transactions until the complete rollout is achieved.
Official Statement
Suzanne Newton, Director General for the Change Delivery Group at HMRC, emphasised the benefits of the new system: “Whether filing Self Assessment tax returns online, claiming a tax refund on the HMRC app, or checking PAYE information, GOV.UK One Login will make it simpler and quicker for customers to access government digital services, while maintaining the security and reliability they expect.”
Future Prospects
The rollout of GOV.UK One Login is part of a broader strategy to enhance the digital landscape of public services, allowing citizens to prove their identity once and reuse it across various governmental platforms. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce the time required for online interactions with government agencies.
Support and Information
For individuals requiring assistance with the new login system, the Government Digital Service is available for support. As more services are integrated into the GOV.UK One Login framework, users can anticipate an increasingly seamless experience when interacting with government online.
