New Towns Taskforce Proposes Development Sites as Public Meeting Approaches
In September 2024, the UK Government initiated the New Towns Taskforce, an independent committee aimed at identifying potential locations and strategies for establishing a series of new towns. The Taskforce’s final report, released in September 2025, has pinpointed 12 prospective sites across England, including two in London, which could accommodate up to 40,000 new homes.
Key Findings of the Taskforce
The report highlights that significant upgrades to transport infrastructure and well-defined governance structures will be critical to realise these new town developments. The need for improved transport links is particularly crucial given the projected population growth and housing demands.
Upcoming Public Meeting
On Wednesday, 11 February 2026, the London Assembly Planning and Regeneration Committee will convene to discuss the practicalities involved in delivering these new towns. The session will take place from 2 PM to 5 PM at City Hall, located at Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE. Members of the public and media are invited to attend this important meeting.
Panel Discussions
The meeting will feature two panels of expert guests:
- Panel 1 (2:00 PM – 3:30 PM):
- David Christie, Head of Growth and Masterplanning, Transport for London
- Sowmya Parthasarathy, New Towns Taskforce
- Kate Greenway, Project Director, Thamesmead Waterfront, Peabody
- Panel 2 (3:30 PM – 5:00 PM):
- Tom Copley, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Residential Development
- Brett Leahy, Strategic Director of Planning, Growth and Infrastructure, London Borough of Enfield
- Louise Duggan, Head of Regeneration and Growth Strategies, GLA
Significance of the Initiative
This initiative is vital for addressing the ongoing housing crisis in the UK, particularly in urban areas where demand outstrips supply. Establishing new towns could provide much-needed homes while also boosting local economies through job creation and infrastructure development.
Those unable to attend the meeting in person can view it either live or later via the London Assembly’s webcast or on YouTube.
