Young Women Encouraged to Shape the Future through Diplomat for a Day Initiative
A new competition, “Diplomat for a Day,” jointly launched by the British and Canadian embassies, aims to empower young women and girls to step into leadership roles and advocate for gender equality. Winners will have the opportunity to engage with diplomats in Luxembourg, gaining insights into diplomatic practices and discussing the importance of equal rights for women.
The Importance of Representation
Women and girls make up half of the global population, representing an equivalent share of potential in shaping societal progress. However, there remains a significant underrepresentation of women in international diplomacy and other influential sectors, including politics and business. This competition is part of broader efforts by both Canada and the United Kingdom to bridge the gaps in opportunity and ensure equitable outcomes for all.
Who Can Enter?
Entry to the competition is open to young women and girls who meet the following criteria:
- Currently residing in Luxembourg;
- Enrolled in a high school within the country;
- Aged between 16 and 19 years old, or will turn 16 by 2026;
- Proficient in the English language.
Participants must secure consent from a parent or legal guardian before entering, and there are no fees associated with the application process.
How to Participate
Interested candidates need to formulate a response to the question: “What positive change would you like to see to ensure equal rights for all women, including those who face additional barriers (e.g., disability, low income, etc.), and how can you contribute to making that change happen?” Participants can submit their answers via video or written format.
Submissions should be sent along with a completed application form to diplomatforadayluxembourg@gmail.com. It is important to note that both the video or written essay and the application are required to be in English.
Key Dates
Participants should take note of the following timeline:
- Competition opens: Wednesday, 7 January 2026
- Application deadline: Sunday, 8 February 2026, at 23:59 CET
- Winners notified: 23 February 2026
