Owner of Michelin-Star Restaurant Convicted of Drink Spiking
The proprietor of a Michelin-starred establishment has been found guilty of tampering with a woman’s drink in an attempt to incapacitate her for sexual purposes. Vikas Nath, aged 63, spiked a woman’s margarita with a date-rape drug at the renowned Annabel’s private members’ club in Mayfair on January 15, 2024.
Details of the Incident
During a trial at Southwark Crown Court, it was revealed that Nath became frustrated with the woman’s lack of interest in physical relations prior to tampering with her drink. He had brought a bottle of gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) disguised as vanilla extract to the venue. Observant staff at Annabel’s noticed Nath engaging in suspicious behaviour as he attempted to add the drug to the drink using a straw. They successfully intervened before the woman consumed it.
Evidence and Charges
Nath was charged with attempting to administer a substance with intent and possessing a Class B drug. He had two bottles of GBL in his home and a covert camera setup to film sexual encounters without consent. Following the attempted spiking, he was apprehended by staff and was seen shaking his head in disbelief as the jury delivered their verdict.
Furthermore, Nath inadvertently admitted to the crime while being recorded on the venue’s CCTV. After realizing he had been discovered, he disposed of the bottle in a toilet cistern, though it was later recovered by the police. Additionally, bar staff managed to retrieve the prepared drink for forensic analysis.
Victim’s Reaction
The victim expressed feelings of betrayal and was initially skeptical of the staff’s warnings. In court, she reflected on how she had previously defended Nath’s character, saying, “There is no way he could do that.” She also noted that she sent messages expressing confusion about the situation, believing it was somehow her fault.
Interestingly, Nath had previously cautioned her about drink spiking, stating in texts, “My biggest concern last night was someone spiking your drink.” Despite this, he maintained that his aim was merely to help her relax and not to commit a sexual assault.
Prosecution Remarks
Prosecutor Tim Clark KC emphasized that Nath’s intentions were clear, stating he was “impatient with the lack of progress” and ultimately wished to take the victim to his home, where he had set up a camera to record sexual acts. Text messages presented during the trial revealed Nath’s explicit thoughts about the victim, highlighting a predatory mindset.
Nath expressed regret during his testimony but claimed that he did not understand the substance he used was illegal. However, he faced significant backlash, and Timothy Greaves from the Crown Prosecution Service underscored the severe impact of spiking incidents on victims, affirming the commitment to pursue justice rigorously.
Background
Drink spiking has been a critical issue in the UK, with numerous campaigns aimed at raising awareness about its dangers. High-profile cases, such as this one, have prompted discussions on the need for stricter regulations and enhanced safety measures in social settings.
A further hearing in Nath’s case is scheduled for February 16, where the judicial process will continue as the implications of this conviction unfold.
