Manhunt for Gunman Following Brown University Shooting
A search is ongoing for the individual responsible for a shooting incident at Brown University in the United States, which resulted in the deaths of two students and left nine others injured. Authorities have now released new images and video footage of a person considered to be of interest to the investigation.
Details of the Incident
The tragic shooting occurred on Saturday afternoon during examinations in the engineering and physics building. Reports indicate that the assailant discharged over 40 rounds from a 9mm firearm in Providence, Rhode Island. The attack unfolded at approximately 4:03 PM.
Investigators have since shared images depicting a man dressed in dark attire, a black hat, and a face mask, walking on the streets in the vicinity. Witnesses describe the suspect as stocky and approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall. Authorities hope that the recent release of video timeline footage will assist in identifying him.
Video Footage Released
In a series of clips made public, the suspect’s features remain obscured either by a mask or positioning away from the camera. The recordings show the individual moving swiftly along several streets a block away from the site of the shooting between 2 PM and 3 PM local time.
One video captures the individual walking from the building’s car park towards the street as emergency services began to arrive at the scene. The final clip reveals the same man three minutes after the shooting, making his way down the street.
Safety Concerns Raised
The event has spurred significant worries regarding campus safety, particularly highlighting the inadequacies of security measures in older buildings. Rhode Island’s Attorney General, Peter Neronha, noted the lack of surveillance cameras in the area where the shooting took place, adding that while newer sections of the campus are monitored, the incident location had limited surveillance resources.
Victims Identified
The two students who lost their lives have been identified as 19-year-old Ella Cook from Birmingham, Alabama, and 18-year-old Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov from Brandermill, Virginia. Cook was serving as the vice president of the College Republicans club, while Umurzokov was pursuing a dream of becoming a neurosurgeon.
Family and friends have shared poignant tributes, describing Cook as “an incredibly grounded, faithful, bright light,” and Umurzokov as “incredibly kind, funny, and smart.” His family highlighted his selflessness, stating he was always willing to help others in need.
