Authorities in Devon have issued a warning against swimming in coastal waters after two men went missing while swimming on Christmas Day. The search for the pair, aged 40 and 60, has been called off as concerns about safety in the water continue to mount.

Devon and Cornwall Police were alerted to individuals in distress off a beach in Budleigh Salterton at approximately 10:25 AM on Christmas morning. Efforts to locate the missing swimmers concluded on Thursday evening without any success.
Detective Superintendent Hayley Costar from Devon and Cornwall Police described the situation as “truly tragic.” She highlighted that adverse weather conditions led to the cancellation of numerous official and unofficial swimming events this week.

In light of recent events, police have cautioned the public against swimming in the sea, particularly on Boxing Day, citing the presence of weather warnings. HM Coastguard responded promptly to initial reports, deploying rescue teams from both Exmouth and Beer, as well as RNLI lifeboats from Exmouth, Teignmouth, and Torbay. The RNLI described the sea conditions as ‘punishing’, urging swimmers to consider their limits and the weather before entering the water.
“We strongly advise anyone making plans to swim in coastal areas to reconsider,” Costar added. “Safety should always come first, particularly during times of harsh weather.”
