Extensive Search Underway for Missing 15-Year-Old Off East Yorkshire Coast
The search for 15-year-old Grace Keeling continues in East Yorkshire after she was swept out to sea. Tragically, her mother, 45-year-old Sarah Keeling, and 67-year-old Mark Ratcliffe lost their lives while attempting to save her.
Incident Overview
Humberside Police responded to emergency calls about individuals in distress in the water around 3.15pm on Friday. According to Chief Inspector Tom Stevens, this incident has been deeply upsetting for both families involved, and they are receiving support from specially trained officers as investigations proceed.
Search Efforts and Resources
Authorities are prioritising the search for Grace, employing various methods, including:
- Extensive searches along the coastline
- Drone reconnaissance from Withernsea to Easington led by specialist teams
- An underwater search unit
- Consultation with an oceanographer to enhance search efficacy
Members of the public are urged to stay clear of the area this week to allow for the ongoing emergency operations.
How the Tragedy Unfolded
Investigators are working to clarify the sequence of events leading to the incident. Inspector Stevens revealed that surveillance footage and witness accounts indicate that Grace and a friend were near the rocky shore when she fell into the water, reportedly after being caught by a wave.
In a heroic response, Sarah and several bystanders, including Mark Ratcliffe, jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue Grace. Emergency services, including the HM Coastguard, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, and Humberside Fire and Rescue, arrived rapidly at the scene. They managed to retrieve Mr Ratcliffe from the sea; however, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Sarah’s body was located later that evening.
Community Response
The local community has shown remarkable resilience and support during this tragic event. Inspector Stevens expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by the public and various partner agencies in the search for Grace, acknowledging the invaluable role they have played.
Background
Such tragic incidents serve as stark reminders of the potential dangers associated with coastal activities, especially during unpredictable weather conditions. As the UK grapples with varying environmental challenges, public safety must remain a paramount concern. The families involved also highlight the deep-seated connections many have with our coastlines, which are integral to community life but can also present unforeseen risks.
