Attack on Army Officer: Court Hears Harrowing Details
A uniformed officer in the British Army was the victim of a brutal stabbing near Brompton Barracks in Chatham, Kent, in July 2024. Lieutenant Colonel Mark Teeton survived the attack and recounted to the court that his assailant had attempted to “sever my head” in a manner reminiscent of the infamous murder of soldier Lee Rigby.
The Court Proceedings
During the first day of a three-day sentencing hearing at Maidstone Crown Court, Lt Col Teeton expressed profound gratitude for his survival and for the assistance he received during the assault. His attacker, 25-year-old Anthony Esan, had pleaded guilty in January to charges of attempted murder and possession of two knives.
Lt Col Teeton, who has dedicated 26 years to military service, including multiple deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq, reflected on his near-fatal experience. He described the numerous stab wounds he sustained, which included injuries to his neck, chest, abdomen, and limbs. “I still replay the incident in my mind. It feels like a blessing that I was unconscious for much of it, sparing me the full horror of the attack,” he stated.
Heroic Actions and Family Impact
In court, Lt Col Teeton extended his gratitude to first responders and notably to his wife, Eileen, whom he hailed as a hero for her courage. Mrs. Teeton recounted her shock upon realizing that the soldier she rushed to help on the ground was her husband, witnessing the ongoing savage attack against him.
In her victim impact statement, she revealed a chilling moment in the hospital where her husband asked if his colleagues were aware of what Esan had attempted: “Cut my head off. Like Lee Rigby.”
Details of the Assault
Prosecutor Alison Morgan KC described the attack as “vicious and deliberate,” with Lt Col Teeton being targeted due to his military appearance. Esan’s prior online searches indicated a premeditated intent, including inquiries into knife usage and historical terrorist attacks related to military personnel. At the time of the stabbing, he had asked Lt Col Teeton if he could borrow his phone, using this distraction to carry out the assault.
Background on the Attacker
Prior to this incident, Esan made several unsuccessful attempts to enlist in the British Army, having been previously rejected due to stated mental health concerns including a reported psychotic disorder. The case raises significant questions regarding security and the potential for targeted violence against military personnel.
The sentencing proceedings will continue as the court deliberates the ramifications of this attack, which has not only affected Lt Col Teeton and his family but also reverberated through the military community and the nation at large.
