A tragic mix-up by South Yorkshire Police (SYP) has resulted in a family being wrongly informed that their 17-year-old son, Trevor Wynn, had died in a motor vehicle accident, when he had, in fact, survived. The incident occurred on December 13, during a serious collision on Todwick Road in Rotherham.

The crash claimed the life of 18-year-old Joshua Johnson, whose identity was initially confused with that of Wynn. At the time of the accident, Johnson was reported to be in a critical condition and under sedation in hospital. However, the situation changed dramatically when Wynn woke up and identified himself to the medical staff.
Following this, police initiated additional identification procedures, which confirmed that Wynn was indeed the injured individual in the hospital, while Johnson had tragically succumbed to his injuries.
This devastating error meant that Wynn’s family spent the holiday season under the false impression that their son had died, while Johnson’s family believed he was simply injured and recovering in hospital.
Reactions and Police Response
Assistant Chief Constable Colin McFarlane described the situation as “a huge shock to everyone” and acknowledged the extra trauma injected into both families’ lives due to the police error. He further committed to providing support to both families and engaging specialist agencies to assist in the recovery process.
McFarlane has also reached out to meet with the parents of both teenagers, expressing understanding that they will undoubtedly have many unresolved questions.
