UN Security Council Approves Continued Support for Somalia
The United Kingdom has expressed strong support for the recent unanimous resolution by the UN Security Council, which empowers the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission (AUSSOM) to maintain its critical role in enhancing stability and security in Somalia, backed by the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS).
Resolution Highlights
Officials commended the Council members for their collaborative efforts throughout the negotiations leading up to this resolution. The approval comes on the heels of a recently extended sanctions regime targeting the militant group Al-Shabaab, illustrating the Council’s sustained commitment to assist Somalia in its ongoing battle against this extremist group.
Financial Challenges and Strategic Review
The resolution also acknowledges the significant challenges posed by the underfunding of AUSSOM and the liquidity issues facing UNSOS. To address these obstacles, the mandate includes provisions for an informed assessment of the logistical support from the UN, aimed at enhancing the efficacy of the mission.
Looking ahead, UK representatives expressed eagerness to engage with Council members on this matter in June.
Progress and Ongoing Needs
Since the initial authorization of the African Union Mission in Somalia in 2007, the country has witnessed substantial progress. However, to ensure the effectiveness of continued support, decision-making by the Council must be guided by a comprehensive understanding of the local context into which AUSSOM is deployed.
Honouring Sacrifices
In closing, a tribute was paid to the courageous personnel of AUSSOM and its predecessors who have made the ultimate sacrifice in their efforts to bring peace, as well as to the Somali forces and civilians who have lost their lives in the fight against terrorism.
