New Initiative Aims to Bridge Skills Gap in UK Space Sector
A newly launched initiative aims to facilitate entry into the UK space industry for students through structured internship programmes. With the sector facing significant recruitment challenges, this programme is set to provide practical experience in various disciplines and locations, promoting inclusivity and diversity within the workforce.
Recruitment Challenges in the Space Industry
According to the latest Space Skills Survey, the UK space sector is struggling with recruitment, with 80% of organisations reporting difficulties—a significant increase from 61% in 2020. The survey also highlights that more than half of these organisations have identified skills deficits within their current teams, and 95% are experiencing skills-related challenges. This initiative, named “Skills for Space,” seeks to address these issues directly.
Internship Details
The Skills for Space programme will offer a total of 50 internships, providing undergraduates and Further Education students with eight weeks of hands-on experience in July and August 2026. Participants will engage in real-world projects that benefit the UK space economy, gaining valuable skills in engineering, software development, data science, and professional competencies.
Voices from the Industry
Dr Paul Bate, CEO of the UK Space Agency, emphasised the need for a diverse talent pool to harness opportunities in the rapidly expanding sector. He stated, “Skills for Space will give young people from all backgrounds the chance to gain real-world experience and develop the skills our industry needs.”
Ben Stern, Vice Chair of UKspace, acknowledged the importance of raising awareness about career opportunities in the space sector. He noted that internships often serve as gateways to permanent positions, allowing both students and companies to build relationships.
Importance of the Initiative
The UK space industry currently supports over 55,000 jobs and contributes £18.6 billion to the economy. By offering structured internships, the UK Space Agency aims to enhance the talent pipeline and further the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) along with larger organisations, helping to ensure the UK remains competitive on a global scale.
Application Process
Applications for these internships are now open, with placements expected to be confirmed in May. This initiative not only addresses immediate skill shortages but also fosters a more inclusive industry for the future.
