Concerns Emerge Over US Social Media Policy Impact on Tourism
A recent survey indicates that a significant portion of international tourists may reconsider their plans to visit the United States if new proposals requiring the examination of social media accounts are enacted. The proposed measures may reportedly lead to a decline in tourism spending by $15 billion (£10.8 billion) and jeopardise approximately 157,000 jobs across the American economy.
Proposed Measures and Initial Reactions
The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency has suggested the collection of five years’ worth of social media data from travellers from certain countries, including the UK, who use the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). This follows an increase in monitoring measures initiated during the Trump administration over international travellers and immigrants.
The survey, initiated by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), involved over 4,500 participants from various countries eligible for ESTA. Findings revealed that around two-thirds of respondents were aware of the impending changes, potentially leading to swift alterations in travel intentions if the new regulations take effect.
Economic Implications
The WTTC’s analysis warns of severe economic repercussions should the screening policy proceed. Gloria Guevara, president and CEO of the WTTC, stated that while border security is crucial, the proposed changes could undermine job creation—a priority for the current administration. Estimates suggest that over 150,000 jobs could be at risk, mirroring typical job growth observed in other sectors.
Trump’s Perspective on Safety
In response to queries about the potential negative impact on tourism, President Trump defended the measures, asserting that they are critical for national safety and security. He stated, “We want to make sure we’re not letting the wrong people come into our country,” without specifying the objectives of scrutinising social media accounts or the rationale for such extensive data collection.
Criticism and Concerns
The planned policy has drawn criticism from various quarters, particularly from immigration and free speech advocates who express worries regarding the intent behind the measures and the possibility of targeting dissenters. Experts urge US policymakers to thoroughly evaluate the economic and employment consequences of the policy before implementation.
Background
This initiative comes during a period when international tourism to the US remains significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with March 2025 statistics indicating arrivals at approximately 86.4% of the pre-pandemic levels recorded in March 2019. As the tourism industry works towards recovery, the proposed changes could further hinder growth in a competitive global market.
