Infighting Marks Inaugural Your Party Conference
Zarah Sultana has opted to boycott the opening day of the Your Party Conference, protesting the exclusion of certain left-leaning members. Ms Sultana, who co-launched Your Party with former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in July, has claimed that the expulsion of members from groups like the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) represents a “witch hunt”.
Concerns Over Expulsions
As the conference began in Liverpool, tensions surfaced when it was revealed that members of the SWP had been barred from participation due to the party’s rules against dual membership. In response, a representative for Ms Sultana criticized these actions as indefensible, highlighting the need for the party to be inclusive of all socialists. She stated, “This witch hunt is indefensible. We must build a party that welcomes all socialists.”
SWP’s Position
The SWP has argued that dual membership should be permissible since it does not field candidates in elections. Lewis Nieslon, the party’s national secretary, faced expulsion while traveling to the conference, describing it as a mistake for Your Party to oppose groups that have historically supported its foundation. He emphasised, “With far-right Reform UK topping the polls, we urgently need a new party that unites the whole left.”
Counterfire and Other Exclusions
Reports suggest that members of another socialist organization, Counterfire, have also been banned from the event. Cllr Michael Lavalette, who played a role in establishing the Preston branch of Your Party, claimed he was denied entry based on unfounded allegations of intended disruption. He expressed confusion about the decision and reaffirmed his supportive stance towards Your Party.
Allegations of a Purge
Ms Sultana has been a proponent of “maximum member democracy” and insists that all socialists, regardless of their affiliations, should be welcomed into Your Party. Her supporters view the recent expulsions as a concerted effort to remove those backing her vision for the party. They have criticized unnamed officials close to Jeremy Corbyn for allegedly overriding member input.
In contrast, a spokesperson for Your Party dismissed claims of a purge as inaccurate, asserting that the membership rules were simply enforced. The spokesperson added, “We’re focused on hosting a democratic founding conference with thousands of members coming together to debate and decide the big issues.”
Upcoming Speeches and Organisational Strains
Although Ms Sultana’s speech is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, tensions regarding the programming have arisen, as critical voting on issues such as dual membership will conclude before her address. This peculiar timing has raised eyebrows among observers. Sources indicate that Ms Sultana was not involved in the conference’s planning and has experienced a significant rift since parting ways with the independent alliance meant to pilot the party’s formation.
Corbyn’s Acknowledgement
Jeremy Corbyn has acknowledged the internal challenges facing Your Party, indicating that the situation has improved recently. When questioned about his relationship with Ms Sultana, he described her as a “colleague” but refrained from characterising their rapport as a friendship. The split between the two has drawn attention, particularly in light of Ms Sultana’s earlier critiques of the independent alliance.
Background
The establishment of Your Party aims to provide a new platform for leftist ideals amidst ongoing political shifts in the UK. However, the emerging conflicts highlight challenges that may hinder its initial objectives, emphasizing the pressing need for unity within the party to effectively address the current political landscape.
