Project Mercury: £2.5 Million Contract Awarded to Transform Military Medical Records Access
The Defence Medical Services has awarded a contract worth £2.5 million to Avenue3, a digital health-care consultancy based in Leeds. This contract aims to develop a Deployed Clinical Record system that will allow military clinicians to access medical records globally, including in remote areas.
Overview of Project Mercury
Designed specifically for the Cyber & Specialist Operation Command’s Defence Medical Services, Project Mercury will enable military doctors and nurses to view, record, and share medical information across various devices during deployments. This capability is particularly crucial for operations in locations lacking internet connectivity.
The application will utilise Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, which operates similarly to contactless payments, allowing data to be transferred offline.
Progress and Future Plans
This contract marks a significant step toward implementing Project Mercury, moving it from the proof-of-concept stage to full operational use. The first live release is slated for Spring 2026, followed by additional development and deployment throughout 2027.
Expert Opinions
Lieutenant Colonel Michael Claydon, Clinical Lead for Project Mercury, described the initiative as transformative, asserting that it will enhance the effectiveness and accuracy of care for personnel deployed worldwide. He highlighted Avenue3 as an ideal partner due to their commitment to collaborating closely with UK and NATO medical professionals.
Meanwhile, Alex McNair, the Chief Technology Officer and Founder of Avenue3, emphasised the project’s role in providing safe and resilient health care for service members. He noted that the application is founded on open standards and a clinically-focused design.
Significance for Defence Policy
This contract aligns with the Defence Industrial Strategy 2025, which aims to increase spending by the Ministry of Defence (MOD) on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), reflecting a commitment to supporting UK businesses within the defence sector.
Celebration of Launch
The official launch of the delivery phase was marked by a recent event at the Green Howards Museum in Richmond, North Yorkshire. This gathering showcased the history of military medical equipment and the evolution of healthcare in deployment contexts.
Project Mercury is being managed by the Programme Cortisone team in conjunction with Defence Digital, which is working to establish a comprehensive ecosystem of Healthcare Information Services to replace outdated systems with a cutting-edge, secure platform.
