Farmers Embrace New Tool to Enhance Fertiliser Management
On 4 February, a user-friendly online tool designed for nutrient management planning was launched, aiming to assist farmers and land managers in improving productivity while minimising environmental pollution. The nutrient management planning tool (NMPT-GB) is now available to users in England and Wales, with a Scottish version anticipated later this year.
Maximising Nutrient Efficiency
The NMPT-GB enables agricultural professionals to tailor their fertiliser and manure application according to the specific requirements of their crops and soil. By optimising the use of essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphate, potash, sulphur, and lime, farmers can enhance the availability of these resources for food production while simultaneously reducing nutrient runoff into water bodies and the atmosphere.
Supporting Government Initiatives
The tool aligns with the objectives set out in the Food Strategy and the Environment Improvement Plan 2023, reinforcing the government’s commitment to sustainable farming practices. Farming Minister Dame Angela Eagle remarked on the importance of such innovative resources, stating that the government aims to support farmers in boosting profitability while safeguarding the environment.
Background and Development
Developed by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) in collaboration with the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), RSK ADAS, and RSK Business Solutions, NMPT-GB is based on current guidelines from the AHDB Nutrient Management Guide (RB209), as well as Scottish Technical Notes. This collaborative effort underscores a growing recognition in the agricultural sector of the need for science-led technological advancements.
User-Centric Design Features
NMPT-GB is crafted with user experience in mind, featuring on-screen guidance, alerts, and useful links to external resources to aid compliance with existing nutrient regulations, including Nitrate Vulnerable Zones and Farming Rules for Water in England and Wales. Importantly, any data input by farmers is kept confidential and is only accessible to them and their designated users, ensuring privacy and security within the digital platform.
Further Assistance and Accessibility
- The tool enhances the accessibility of the latest nutrient recommendations.
- Farmers are invited to participate in a webinar conducted by RSK ADAS, scheduled for Wednesday 4th March, aimed at showcasing NMPT-GB’s functionalities.
- Though the tool is recommended for effective nutrient management, there is no legal obligation to use it.
The launch of NMPT-GB represents a significant step forward for UK agriculture, empowering farmers to adopt more sustainable practices while improving operational efficiency.
