Airlines Halt Flights Amid Venezuela Tensions
Three international airlines have suspended services from Venezuela following a warning about a “potentially hazardous situation”. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) alerted airlines over increasing military activity and security concerns within the country.
Flight Cancellations
Brazilian airline Gol, Colombia’s Avianca, and TAP Air Portugal have confirmed the cancellation of flights from Caracas as of Saturday. TAP Air Portugal announced the cancellations of both its Saturday flight and one scheduled for Tuesday, referencing safety concerns from US aviation authorities.
Aeronautica Civil de Colombia also issued a statement indicating “potential risks” for flights in the Maiquetia area, citing deteriorating security conditions and heightened military tensions in the region. Spain’s Iberia has joined in the cancellations, suspending flights to Caracas from Monday until further notice.
US Military Operations and Build-up
The US is reportedly preparing for a new phase of military operations related to Venezuela. Although the exact nature and timing of these operations remain unclear, US officials indicate that plans are advancing.
There has been a significant military presence developed in the Caribbean, including the largest US aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R Ford, accompanied by several other warships and advanced aircraft. Reports suggest that the Pentagon is hedging its communications, with questions being directed to the White House.
Political Context
The Trump administration has expressed concerns over Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who is accused of being involved in drug trafficking that allegedly contributes to drug-related deaths in the US. President Maduro has categorically denied these allegations while accusing the US of attempting to engineer regime change in Venezuela.
As tensions escalate, the US is set to designate the Cartel de los Soles, an alleged Venezuelan crime group, as a foreign terrorist organisation, which is seen as a direct response to claims about their role in narcotics traffic into the US.
Background
The situation in Venezuela has been fraught with instability for years, exacerbated by a declining economy and widespread political unrest. The US has maintained a keen interest in the region, particularly concerning drug trafficking routes and geopolitical strategies involving Latin America.
In recent months, the US military has executed at least 21 operations targeting alleged drug smuggling vessels in Caribbean waters, resulting in significant casualties among those involved.
