Urgent Call for Action in South Sudan Amid Rising Violence
As South Sudan grapples with escalating violence and unrest, calls for a recommitment to peace are becoming increasingly urgent. Over seven years after the signing of the Revitalised Agreement for the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), hopes for stability remain unfulfilled, with ongoing violations of the agreement and a return to widespread conflict threatening both the nation and the region.
Failure of the Transitional Government
Initially intended to foster unity and peace, the R-ARCSS has not resulted in the expected outcomes. President Kiir was poised to lead a national unity government; however, this has not materialised effectively. Power-sharing principles have been disregarded, with little progress in implementing the terms of the agreement. Mismanagement of public resources is prevalent, with public servants going unpaid while international donations cover essential services for citizens.
Once a middle-income country supported by oil revenue, South Sudan is now among the poorest and most corrupt nations globally. The leadership’s focus appears misaligned, with disruptive unilateral changes overshadowing governance and preparations for elections.
Rising Violence and Regional Concerns
The resurgence of conflict across South Sudan poses a stark warning. Any escalation akin to the violence seen in 2013 and 2016 would be devastating, not only for the South Sudanese people but also for surrounding countries already impacted by the destabilising effects of Sudan’s turmoil.
Immediate Actions Required
For the sake of South Sudan’s citizens and regional stability, an immediate shift in leadership actions is essential. Key parties, especially SPLM-IG and SPLM-IO, must halt armed confrontations and return to a nationwide ceasefire while engaging in sustained dialogue. The transitional government is urged to:
- Cease aerial assaults against civilians.
- Release political detainees.
- Utilise public funds to ensure public sector salaries are paid.
- Invest in critical health, education, and other services.
Moreover, officials in the transitional government must stop interfering with humanitarian operations and respect the movement of UN peacekeepers. Recent actions obstructing these forces are particularly concerning and require immediate rectification.
International Response and Future Prospects
All nations allied with South Sudan, particularly its neighbours, must deliver a united message: the ongoing conflict must cease. South Sudan’s leaders need to prioritise rebuilding trust both domestically and internationally through actionable reforms. Successful reform efforts will pave the way for increased global support, investment, and respect in the face of overwhelming challenges.
