Family Raises Concerns Over Mother’s Cosmetic Surgery Death in Turkey
The family of Sophie Hunt, a mother-of-two from Northampton, has expressed their worry regarding the fitness of their daughter for cosmetic surgery procedures she underwent in Turkey, leading to her untimely death. The 34-year-old passed away on 9 March 2022, just two days after a tummy tuck and a Brazilian butt lift at the Nisantasi Hospital in Istanbul.
Inquest Findings
During an inquest at Northampton Coroner’s Court, it was revealed that Ms Hunt suffered from multi-organ failure and experienced three cardiac arrests following the surgeries. Her mother, Sandra Hunt, provided a statement detailing that her daughter had lost consciousness post-operation and exhibited unusual swelling in her hands.
According to documentation from the hospital, some of Ms Hunt’s ECG readings suggested irregular heart activity, which raised red flags about her overall health prior to the surgeries. Sandra Hunt expressed her belief that her daughter was unfit for such procedures and voiced concerns about potential complications from the BBL if excessive fat was manipulated during the process.
Jurisdictional Limitations
Assistant coroner Sophie Lomas noted that her investigation was limited because Ms Hunt died outside the UK. She indicated that comprehensive scrutiny of what transpired in the Istanbul hospital was not within her purview.
A report from Turkey’s Council of Forensic Medicine stated that Ms Hunt had no known medical issues and sought surgery due to her dissatisfaction with her abdomen and buttocks. She underwent the operations on 7 March 2022, before subsequently losing consciousness.
Emergency Response and Conclusion
Ms Hunt was initially resuscitated but suffered a second cardiac arrest while being transported to Avrupa Safak Hospital, which had a dedicated cardiac intensive care unit. Unfortunately, she succumbed to respiratory and organ failure at that facility.
The Turkish investigation concluded that her death resulted from complications associated with the surgeries. A subsequent post-mortem in the UK affirmed that the procedures were to blame for her fatal complications.
While the precise cause of the cardiac arrests remains uncertain, it is believed they were related to the cosmetic surgeries. The coroner officially determined that Sophie Hunt died due to complications arising from operations performed abroad.
