Man Jailed for Attempted Murder of Girlfriend in Hotel Room Attack
A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to over six years in prison after attempting to murder his girlfriend during an incident at a luxury hotel in Edinburgh. Sean Hendry’s brutal assault, which included strangulation and physical violence, left the victim fearing for her life.
Details of the Assault
The attack took place on February 22, 2025, in their hotel room at the Sheraton Grand Hotel and Spa. Following a night out dining and drinking, an angry Hendry turned violent as he accused his partner of communicating with other men. In a terrifying display of aggression, he subdued her on the bed, choked her, and prevented her from breathing, even placing a pillow over her face.
According to prosecutor Alan Cameron KC, the victim struggled gasping for air, fearing she would lose consciousness. Hendry’s threats during this heinous act included statements that they would “both die tonight” and that he would “slit [her] throat.”
Rescue and Aftermath
After a brief break in the assault, Hendry attempted to jump from a hotel window. This action created an opportunity for the victim to escape into the hallway, where she called for help. Two hotel guests intervened and alerted security, witnessing Hendry’s erratic behaviour as he continued to confront the victim.
Hotel staff subsequently detained Hendry until police arrived. Following his arrest, Hendry was released under specific conditions, including a ban on contacting the victim.
Violation of Release Conditions
Despite the legal restrictions, Hendry quickly violated these conditions by contacting his girlfriend within hours of his release, demanding access to his bank card. His persistence escalated when he appeared at her home in Alloa, threatening to break in, which caused the victim severe distress and resulted in a panic attack.
Legal Proceedings
In November at the High Court in Edinburgh, Hendry pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including attempted murder and acting in a threatening manner both during the hotel incident and later at the victim’s home. On Tuesday, he received a sentence of six years and three months in jail, coupled with three years under license after his release. Additionally, a 15-year ban on any contact with the victim was imposed.
Background
This case highlights persistent issues of domestic violence and the critical need for effective measures to protect victims. As this incident unfolds, it underscores the importance of legal frameworks and support systems designed to safeguard individuals from abusive relationships in the UK.
