£203 Million Contract Awarded for Water Treatment Services in Britain
The Mining Remediation Authority has signed an extensive contract with Alpheus Environmental Limited to enhance operational support for the treatment of mine water in Great Britain. Over a span of eight years, this partnership will involve significant management and maintenance of water assets crucial for safeguarding vital drinking water supplies and environmental integrity.
Details of the Contract
The new agreement, valued at £203 million, was finalised following a thorough tendering process and officially commenced on January 1. Alpheus will oversee the operational management of 82 mine water treatment facilities, as well as 10 subsidence pumping stations. Additionally, the company will be responsible for collecting and managing data from more than 700 monitoring locations.
Carl Banton, Operations Director at the Mining Remediation Authority, highlighted the importance of this initiative in preventing pollution. “In 2024 to 2025, we operated and maintained a network that treated 232 billion litres of mine water, effectively safeguarding drinking water sources and ecosystems,” he stated. To further illustrate its impact, he noted that the schemes help keep approximately 3,682 tonnes of iron from entering the nation’s waterways each year.
Alpheus Environmental Limited: A Key Player
Alpheus, a member of the Anglian Water Group, is recognised as a prominent provider of water treatment and environmental services in the UK, offering over three decades of experience in the sector. Chris Deadman, Managing Director of Alpheus, expressed enthusiasm regarding this partnership, which aims to protect communities and the environment from the historical impacts of mining. He commented on the complementary approaches between Alpheus and the Authority, indicating a collaborative effort to optimise water management effectively.
Transition and Acknowledgments
During the six-month transition period from the previous contractor, Severn Trent Services, Banton extended appreciation for their eleven years of dedicated service in protecting and enhancing environmental conditions. This seamless transition is intended to ensure continuity in operational efficiency and environmental protection.
Background
Great Britain has a rich mining history, which has unfortunately left a legacy of contaminated water sources. The Mining Remediation Authority was established to manage and mitigate these impacts, ensuring that local watercourses and drinking supplies remain safe and clean for the population. The importance of effective mine water treatment schemes cannot be overstated, especially in light of increasing environmental concerns and regulatory mandates.
