Victoria in Crisis as Bushfires Rage Amidst Extreme Heatwave
Parts of Victoria, Australia, have been officially designated as disaster zones following the widespread devastation caused by bushfires that have scorched over 300,000 hectares. As a relentless heatwave continues, thousands of homes and businesses are left without power.
Current Fire Situation
The Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan, reported that approximately 30,000 properties are currently deprived of electricity. Ms Allan acknowledged the severity of the situation in a post on social media, indicating that there are ten major fire fronts and an additional twenty fires under close observation. She warned that conditions are both hazardous and unpredictable.
Among the active incidents, there have been 16 emergency alerts issued, marking the fires at Walwa, Longwood, Wonnangatta, and Ravenswood as particularly critical.
In the town of Malmsbury, located 88 kilometres northwest of Melbourne, local fire crews have shared footage of their battles against the fierce blazes.
New South Wales on Alert
Meanwhile, the neighbouring state of New South Wales is also grappling with a series of 47 fires, with four of them remaining uncontrollable as per the latest updates. Trent Curtin, Commissioner of the NSW Rural Fire Service, cautioned that the weather conditions are expected to be particularly challenging, making it difficult to manage some of the fires if they escalate.
Impacts of the Fires
The bushfires in Victoria are being labelled the worst since the catastrophic Black Summer blazes of 2019-20, which resulted in the destruction of an area comparable to Turkey and claimed 33 lives. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted the extreme and dangerous fire conditions facing the nation.

The most devastating fire near Longwood has resulted in the destruction of 30 structures, including vineyards and farmland, as it has burned approximately 130,000 hectares of bushland. Fortunately, three individuals previously reported missing have now been accounted for.
Potential Risk of Cyclones
Amidst these wildfire challenges, there are additional concerns regarding potential flooding following the development of a tropical low-pressure system approaching Queensland. This system is anticipated to intensify into a category one tropical cyclone, with expected landfall occurring between Cardwell and Bowen in the early hours of Sunday. The Bureau of Meteorology has already noted sustained winds and dangerous wind gusts.
