Body of Swimmer Disappeared on Christmas Day Found
The body of a man who went missing while swimming on Christmas Day has been discovered at Budleigh Salterton Beach. Authorities confirmed that the 47-year-old’s remains were located on Tuesday morning after weeks of searches, while a second man in his 60s from East Devon is still unaccounted for.
Discovery of the Body
Devon and Cornwall Police received reports of the man’s body being spotted on the shore at approximately 8:45 am. Emergency services pronounced him dead at the scene, and his next-of-kin has been notified. Formal identification procedures are yet to be completed.
Community Response
Superintendent Ryan Doyle expressed condolences, describing the situation as deeply saddening for the family and community. He confirmed that support is being provided to the family of the deceased, who have requested privacy during this challenging time. The family of the second missing individual has also been informed and is receiving help.
Background
The tragic incident unfolded when both men disappeared while swimming at a popular beach known for its festive swims. Last year’s Christmas and Boxing Day swims in the Devon and Cornwall region had been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, which included a yellow weather warning for strong winds affecting parts of the south west.
Rescue teams comprising coastguard units from Exmouth and Beer, as well as Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) crews from Exmouth, Teignmouth, and Torbay, were mobilised on Boxing Day to search for the missing men. The sea conditions were described by rescuers as “punishing,” raising further concerns about safety during such events.
