According to police, friends and emergency services managed to rescue him from the water, where he sustained serious injuries to both legs. New South Wales Police Superintendent Joseph McNulty stated, “He’s in for the fight of his life now, and the actions of emergency services yesterday gave him that chance.”
In a separate occurrence, a surfer was also critically injured at North Steyne Beach in Manly after being bitten on the leg. Local reports indicate onlookers helped pull the man out of the water onto the sand. Additionally, an 11-year-old boy narrowly escaped a shark encounter when a shark bit his surfboard off Dee Why Beach, with lifesavers ensuring he emerged unscathed.

In response to these alarming incidents, the Northern Beaches Council announced new safety measures, including the installation of shark warning signs and the deployment of a jet ski to patrol the waters. A drone has also been launched by New South Wales Surf Life Saving to monitor shark activity in the area.

The recent shark attacks follow several days of heavy rainfall, which has introduced fresh water into Sydney Harbour, possibly contributing to the ideal conditions for bull sharks. Superintendent McNulty suggested that the combination of brackish and fresh water, along with the splashing activity, may have created a “perfect storm” for the attacks to occur.
