Investigation Launched Into Rising London Bus Journey Times
Recent data from Transport for London (TfL) indicates a troubling trend in bus journey times, which have been on the rise since 2020. Despite attempts to address this issue, TfL has fallen short of its journey time targets since 2022/23, prompting officials and stakeholders to examine the reasons behind this decline.
Public Concerns over Delay
A report released by London TravelWatch in November 2024 reveals that one-third of survey participants believe the slow pace of buses discourages them from using public transport more frequently. Additionally, over a third of those surveyed cite the speed of bus travel as a crucial factor in their decision-making process.
Potential Financial Benefits
Researchers at London TravelWatch have suggested that increasing the average speed of London buses by just one mile per hour could lead to significant savings for TfL, estimated between £100 to £200 million annually. This increase in speed could also yield additional revenue ranging from £80 to £85 million.
Transport Committee to Take Action
In response to these findings, the Transport Committee plans to investigate the causes behind the prolonged bus journey times and evaluate existing measures implemented by TfL to rectify the situation. A diverse panel has been assembled for this inquiry, including:
- Michael Roberts, Chief Executive, London TravelWatch
- Keven Stagg, Chair, London & Eastern Passenger Committee, Unite
- Jim Kelly, Vice Chair, London & Eastern Passenger Committee, Unite
- Paul Lynch, Managing Director – London, Stagecoach Bus and President of the Confederation of Passenger Transport
