Debbie Crosbie Appointed as New Women in Finance Champion
The UK government has named Dame Debbie Crosbie, CEO of Nationwide Building Society, as the new Women in Finance Champion, succeeding Dame Amanda Blanc. Crosbie’s appointment comes as officials intensify efforts to enhance the representation of women in senior roles within the City of London.
Dame Amanda Blanc’s Legacy
Dame Amanda Blanc has held the position for the past five years, during which time the proportion of women in senior finance roles increased from 32% to 36%. Her leadership was instrumental in developing initiatives aimed at bolstering the talent pipeline for women aspiring to enter financial services.
Under Blanc’s stewardship, significant programmes were launched, fostering diverse representations in leadership roles across the sector, including those in technology. She also spearheaded the Mirror Taskforce, which focuses on supporting mid-level women professionals, and led the Women in Finance Climate Action Group during COP26.
Incoming Champion’s Vision
Dame Debbie Crosbie will officially take over the role starting January 1, 2026. She aims to continue the momentum created by her predecessor in advocating for women in finance and expanding upon the HM Treasury Women in Finance Charter, which encompasses over 440 firms. This initiative seeks to improve women’s leadership representation to promote productivity and growth within UK financial services.
Government Support for Gender Equality
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, expressed confidence in Crosbie’s abilities, highlighting the importance of ensuring that younger women understand they can aspire to any career without limitations. Reeves acknowledged Blanc’s contributions and looked forward to working with Crosbie to further advance gender equality in finance.
Dame Debbie stated her commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, asserting that when women thrive in business, they not only inspire future generations but also contribute to sustainable economic growth. She expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with industry leaders and the Chancellor to amplify the progress already made.
Future Outlook
As the first female CEO of Nationwide, Crosbie is well-positioned to drive further change. She has been recognised for her contributions to the financial sector, being appointed a Dame Commander of the British Empire in June 2025.
This transition in leadership in the Women in Finance initiative comes at a crucial time as the UK continues to navigate challenges related to gender parity in the workplace.
