Empowering Women in Guatemala: Chevening Alumni Initiatives Foster Leadership and Entrepreneurship
A series of initiatives led by the Chevening Alumni programme in Guatemala aim to bolster women’s leadership and economic engagement. These events brought together various stakeholders, including specialists, entrepreneurs, and local partners, to encourage dialogue, learning, and networking opportunities.
Fostering Entrepreneurship Among Women
The first initiative, titled “Woman in Entrepreneurship,” took place on January 17 at Fundación BI in Zone 4 of Guatemala City. This event attracted over 30 participants for a morning filled with inspiration, mentorship, and opportunities to forge professional connections. Female representatives from diverse fields such as construction, technology, gastronomy, and the arts shared their personal stories, highlighting both their challenges and successes in a candid discussion. The atmosphere was conducive to open dialogue, facilitating valuable networking while enhancing the collective understanding of women’s roles within Guatemala’s entrepreneurial landscape.
Academic Exchange on Economic Participation
On January 22, Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (UVG) hosted an academic exchange concerning “Women’s Economic Participation and Entrepreneurship in Guatemala.” This free event was designed to scrutinise the economic circumstances faced by women from a multidisciplinary perspective. Various Chevening Alumni and other professionals presented research and case studies that addressed significant issues such as educational gaps, racism, and structural barriers that hinder women’s access to the job market. This discussion highlighted the complexities of these challenges while calling for collaborative, evidence-based solutions.
Commitment to Gender Equity
Both initiatives reflect the dedication of the Chevening network in Guatemala to enhancing women’s leadership and economic equity. Through support from the Chevening Alumni Programme Fund (CAPF), these events promote spaces for analysis, learning, and collective action, all aimed at making a tangible impact in communities across the region.
Background
Globally, women’s economic participation remains a critical issue, with ongoing disparities across various sectors. The UK has long supported gender equality initiatives, particularly through platforms like the Chevening programme, which offers opportunities for individuals to develop leadership skills and advocate for change in their home countries. This recent focus on Guatemala underscores a broader commitment to empowering women in regions where they face significant barriers to success.
