Severe Cold Weather Alert Across the UK This New Year
As 2026 approaches, many in the UK will face biting temperatures, with an amber health alert issued for various regions. Forecasts predict the arrival of colder conditions, causing temperatures to plummet and posing risks, especially to vulnerable populations.
Weather Forecast and Alerts
Weather experts have indicated that the end of 2025 will not offer particularly pleasant conditions, with expected temperatures hovering around 7-8°C. However, the situation is predicted to deteriorate as the new year sets in.
Dr Christopher England, a meteorologist from Sky News, noted that the upcoming days will bring predominantly cloudy skies, coupled with potential clearer intervals. These clearer spells may lead to frost and fog overnight. Winds are expected to remain breezy in southern areas, while northern regions could experience harsher frost.
Impact of Cold Weather
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has enacted an amber cold health alert affecting the North East and North West of England. This alert, lasting from 8 PM on December 31 to noon on January 5, warns that temperatures may descend to between 3-5°C. The agency has cautioned that this cold snap is likely to have significant health implications, particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Health Risks and Services Impacted
Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at UKHSA, emphasised the importance of checking on vulnerable individuals during this cold period. The expected temperature drops could heighten the risk of serious health issues such as heart attacks and strokes, primarily among those aged 65 and older or with underlying health conditions.
Moreover, the agency has forecast that not only will winter pose challenges for health services but that demand for these services will likely increase due to the cold, which may affect staffing and operational capacities. Additionally, indoor temperatures—especially in hospitals and care homes—could fall below recommended levels, heightening health risks.
Additional Alerts Across the UK
A yellow cold health alert has also been issued for several other regions, including the East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, East of England, Yorkshire and Humber, and London, anticipating temperatures ranging from 4-6°C starting from New Year’s Day.
Background
This weather predicament marks the latest in a series of extreme weather events affecting the UK. With a history of serious winter conditions, health officials routinely urge the public to prepare for harsh weather patterns, particularly during the winter months.
The amber and yellow health alerts form part of a broader strategy to safeguard the health of the public during times of severe weather fluctuations.
