Driver Convicted of Christmas Day Murder in London
Anthony Gilheaney, 31, has been found guilty of murder following a violent incident on Christmas Day in London’s West End, which resulted in the death of 25-year-old Aidan Chapman. The jury at the Old Bailey convicted Gilheaney of multiple charges, including attempted murder and wounding with intent, after a drink-fuelled rampage that affected several individuals.
The Incident
The court heard that on 25 December 2024, Gilheaney engaged in a series of unprovoked attacks. After leaving a nightclub early in the morning, he used his high-powered Mercedes to hit and kill Chapman and attempted to injure others as he drove through busy streets. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with pedestrians fleeing in panic.
- Gilheaney first struck Arif Khan with his vehicle and subsequently assaulted him after hurling racial slurs.
- He then targeted Marcelo Basbus-Garcia, his partner Miguel Waihrich, and Tyrone Itorho, attempting to run them over as well.
Chapman succumbed to catastrophic injuries after being hit and died in hospital shortly after New Year’s Eve.
Legal Proceedings
During the trial, Gilheaney admitted to some charges, including causing death through dangerous driving and assaulting Mr. Khan. However, he denied the charges of murder and attempted murder, claiming he lost control of the vehicle after being attacked earlier. The jury, however, found the evidence presented contradicted his defence.
After deliberations, the jury concluded that Gilheaney was guilty of murder, attempted murder, and wounding with intent. He was acquitted of attempting to murder one victim but found guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm on him.
Reaction from Victims’ Families
The family of Aidan Chapman expressed profound grief, stating, “No parent should have to go through the hellish trauma of losing a child.” They described the painful impact of Gilheaney’s actions and the void left by their son’s death, declaring they would never find forgiveness.
Background
This incident marks a disturbing trend involving violence during holiday celebrations that raises concerns over safety and public order in urban areas. With alcohol often cited as a contributing factor, authorities are continually urged to consider preventive measures to avert similar tragedies in the future.
Following his conviction, Gilheaney’s sentencing is scheduled for 30 January, as the ramifications of his actions continue to resonate within the communities affected.
