New Airline Route Resumes Cornwall-London Services
The inaugural flight connecting Cornwall and London, operated by Skybus, successfully took off this past Sunday. This new route, originating from Cornwall Airport Newquay to London Gatwick, comes after the recent collapse of Easter Airways disrupted air travel in the region.
Government-Powered Route
The service will operate daily throughout the year, supported by a subsidy from both the Government and Cornwall Council, reflecting its significance for the local economy. This reinstated connection is protected under a Public Service Obligation (PSO).
Local Leadership Responds
Leigh Frost, leader of Cornwall Council, expressed his satisfaction with the speedy appointment of a new operator, particularly noting the involvement of a Cornish airline. He highlighted the recent difficulties faced by travellers and affirmed that the renewed service would alleviate uncertainty for many passengers.
Additionally, Councillor Tim Dwelly, who oversees economic regeneration and investment, emphasized the importance of re-establishing the route to enhance reliability for both business and tourism sectors. He acknowledged the capability of a Cornish company to step forward during this transitional period.
Flight and Future Plans
The first Skybus flight to Gatwick carried 12 passengers, providing ample room on a 180-seat Boeing 737 that departed Newquay around 15:40 GMT. Looking ahead, Skybus plans to switch to a 78-seat turboprop Q400 aircraft early next month and increase operations to two flights per day by mid-February.
Company’s Commitment
Jonathan Hinkles, managing director of Skybus, conveyed enthusiasm for launching this service, underscoring its potential to simplify travel while fostering opportunities for local businesses and tourism. He acknowledged the vital role of the community in sustaining air connectivity.
Ongoing Developments
Cornwall Council, which owns the airport, is currently overseeing efforts to select a long-term operator for the PSO route. Following the recent disruption, the tendering process for securing a new operator for the upcoming four years is already in progress.
Background
The collapse of Easter Airways last month left a critical gap in air travel for Cornwall, prompting a swift response from local authorities to seek a new airline service. The introduction of Skybus represents a pivotal step in reinstating reliable air connectivity between Cornwall and the capital, both vital for the regional economy and local communities.
