MuWave Secures Funding to Propel High-Power Microwave Technology in the UK
MuWave, a new spinout from the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), has successfully obtained £450,000 from the UK Innovation and Science Seed Fund (UKI2S) to advance its high-power microwave technology. This significant funding aims to facilitate the development and export of products vital for commercial fusion energy and other applications.
Investment and Growth Plans
The financial backing, alongside a spinout agreement with UKAEA, is expected to accelerate MuWave’s development of advanced microwave sources known as gyrotrons. This initiative aligns with UKAEA’s strategy to convert fusion research into profitable commercial ventures, fostering long-term economic benefits from national research and development investments.
Technology Applications
High-power microwave technology harnesses electromagnetic waves to generate extreme temperatures for heating fusion plasma, boasting applications not only in fusion energy but also in satellite communications, radar, geothermal drilling, and medical imaging.
Founders’ Vision
Founded in 2023 by a team of engineers from UKAEA with specialised knowledge in industrial applications, MuWave is set to play a crucial role in enhancing the UK’s position in the global fusion sector. Co-founder Steven Craig remarked on the spinout agreement’s significance, highlighting the validation of their innovative work and its potential commercial impact.
Helen Webster, another co-founder, expressed enthusiasm over securing initial funding, viewing it as a major step forward and an endorsement of their solution to existing challenges.
Supporting the Fusion Sector
The UK’s prototype fusion power plant, STEP Fusion, is anticipated to leverage high-powered microwave technology for its heating systems. Innovations developed during the STEP Fusion research have led to novel ideas aimed at improving high-power microwave systems, which are now being commercialised by MuWave.
Quotes from Key Figures
Heather Lewtas, Chief Development Officer at UKAEA, noted that their pioneering science and innovation aims to generate economic opportunities and jobs in the UK, praising MuWave’s expansion efforts. She emphasised UKAEA’s commitment to maximising both the scientific and economic benefits of fusion technology.
Mark White, Investment Lead for the Fusion Portfolio at UKI2S, underscored the importance of supporting early-stage companies like MuWave. He highlighted how deep scientific knowledge can be transformed into broader economic success, benefiting sectors beyond fusion.
Consultancy and Future Outlook
In addition to product development, MuWave is also offering consultancy services to various organisations both within and outside the fusion sector, further contributing to its commercial viability.
