Guildford Flood Risk Reduction Scheme Unveiled to Community
The Environment Agency, in collaboration with local councils, is inviting residents of Guildford to engage with the latest designs aimed at mitigating flood risks in the town centre. This initiative is part of a long-term sustainable project in response to Guildford’s historical flooding issues, especially from the River Wey.
Details of the Community Engagement Events
As part of the project’s public outreach, two information sessions will be held to present new artists’ impressions and preliminary designs. The events are scheduled for Saturday, 17 January, from noon to 5 PM at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, and Thursday, 22 January, from 3 PM to 6 PM at the Guildford Borough Council offices. Additionally, an online presentation via Microsoft Teams will take place on Tuesday, 20 January, from 7 PM to 8 PM, which will require prior registration.
The Importance of the Scheme
Jon Mansbridge, project director at the Environment Agency, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming events, highlighting the significance of the Guildford Flood Alleviation Scheme. He noted that the initiative is a critical step towards both reducing flood risk and promoting the potential for town centre revitalisation.
Cllr Julia McShane, Leader of Guildford Borough Council, echoed these sentiments, stating that flooding poses serious threats to the community’s homes and businesses. She stressed the importance of community involvement in the planning process, encouraging residents to attend the events and share their views.
Background on Flood Risks in Guildford
Guildford has faced recurrent flooding challenges over the years, prompting the Environment Agency to implement well-established flood protection strategies. The Agency collaborates closely with various partners, including local authorities and emergency services, to support those most at risk. Regular maintenance of the River Wey aims to alleviate flooding, involving the removal of vegetation and blockages.
Furthermore, a temporary defence management plan is in place, detailing procedures for deploying temporary flood barriers in critical areas when flood warnings are issued. This proactive approach signifies the Agency’s commitment to safeguarding the community against adverse weather conditions.
