Shoplifter Receives Jail Time and Warnings After Theft Spree
A 44-year-old woman has been sentenced to 36 weeks in prison for her involvement in a series of thefts across shops in Hampshire. Rachael Cole, residing in Whitehill, admitted to stealing nearly £1,000 worth of goods and has been subsequently issued with an order prohibiting her from wearing wigs while shopping.
Theft Charges and Sentencing
At the Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court, Cole pleaded guilty to four counts of theft occurring between November 10 and December 1. Her actions included the theft of seven bags of dog food from a Sainsbury’s store in Liphook, where she attempted to disguise herself with a wig.
The total value of the stolen items amounted to £964, prompting law enforcement to take action against her repeated misdemeanours. Following her conviction, Cole will also face additional restrictions as part of her criminal behaviour order.
Restrictions Imposed
In addition to the prohibition on wearing wigs or face coverings in shops, Cole has been banned from entering all Sainsbury’s and Tesco locations across the UK, as well as the B&M store in Bordon. Additional stipulations dictate that she must place any items she wishes to purchase in a basket or trolley and must be prepared to show proof of funds if requested, further emphasising the seriousness of her actions. Furthermore, she must vacate any premises in Hampshire and Surrey if asked by store staff.
Police Reaction
Inspector Matt Wake from Hampshire Constabulary commented on Cole’s case, highlighting her persistent and bold approach to theft, even making ineffectual attempts to disguise herself to evade capture. He stressed the importance of imposing strict conditions upon her release from prison, warning that failure to comply would result in her arrest and return to court.
Background
This case is not an isolated incident but rather part of a broader issue concerning shoplifting in the UK. The rise in thefts has been a point of concern for retailers and law enforcement alike. Authorities are increasingly calling for stricter measures to deter shoplifters and protect local businesses from such criminal activities.
