Homes England Partners with East Midlands Combined County Authority to Boost Regional Development
Homes England has established a Strategic Place Partnership (SPP) with the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), marking a significant step towards enhancing housing and regeneration initiatives within the region. This partnership is the Agency’s tenth collaboration with Mayoral Strategic Authorities across the country, aimed at fostering localised housing solutions.
Significance of the Strategic Place Partnership
The creation of Strategic Place Partnerships is crucial for Homes England as it provides a structured approach to support housing and regeneration projects driven by local communities. By collaborating closely with regional leaders who possess in-depth knowledge of their areas, Homes England aims to align national resources with local ambitions.
Ongoing Projects in the Region
In the East Midlands, Homes England is already making strides in collaboration with EMCCA on landmark regeneration initiatives, including the redevelopment of the Broad Marsh site in Nottingham. Acquired by the Agency earlier this year, the former shopping centre is poised for transformation, with plans to attract private investment and reduce risks associated with development.
The redevelopment project aims to deliver approximately 1,000 residential units, alongside 20,000 square metres designated for retail, office, and community spaces, ultimately generating 2,000 new jobs for Nottingham.
Additionally, in Derbyshire, Homes England and EMCCA are working closely with various partners to establish Infinity Garden Village. This project is part of the government’s Garden Communities programme, which encompasses 43 towns and villages nationwide, and is expected to see the construction of 4,530 new homes and a secondary school accommodating 1,500 pupils, along with significant employment space.
Statements from Key Officials
Amy Rees, Chief Executive of Homes England
Amy Rees expressed her enthusiasm, stating that this new partnership represents a pivotal milestone in Homes England’s relationship with Mayoral Strategic Authorities. She emphasised the potential of the SPP to unlock sustainable growth in the East Midlands and highlighted previous successes as models for future initiatives.
Claire Ward, EMCCA Mayor
Claire Ward also stressed the importance of this partnership, noting that it lays the groundwork for delivering the ambition of 100,000 new homes in the region. She articulated a vision of inclusive growth centred on building homes and enhancing community connections through necessary infrastructure and job creation.
Broader Implications
With ten Strategic Place Partnerships now operational across England, Homes England is engaged in collaborative efforts with local authorities nationwide. This initiative aims to facilitate housing development and regeneration, placing the needs of local communities at the forefront of these transformations. Future partnerships are anticipated as the Agency continues its mission to enhance housing delivery and foster community resilience.
