Japan is grappling with a devastating spell of heavy snowfall that has resulted in at least 35 fatalities, as reported by government officials. With further snow expected this weekend, concerns are growing that the situation may worsen.

Nearly 400 individuals have sustained injuries, with 126 suffering serious harm, particularly in the northern and central parts of the country. Affected areas have seen snow accumulation reaching 2 metres (6.5 feet), prompting the deployment of task forces to assist in the worst-hit regions.
The casualties primarily arose from individuals falling while attempting to clear accumulated snow from their properties. In one tragic instance, a man in his 50s was discovered collapsed on the roof of his home in Uonuma, a city in Niigata prefecture known for its rice cultivation. Additionally, a man in his 70s from Nagaoka city reportedly died after falling from his house’s roof.

As temperatures begin to rise, officials have cautioned that melting snow could potentially trigger landslides, posing further risks to safety. Chief cabinet secretary Minoru Kihara urged the public to prioritise their safety, recommending the use of helmets or lifelines when clearing snow.

The causes behind this extreme weather are currently unknown, yet snow-related deaths and accidents are not rare occurrences in Japan. In the six winter months of the previous year, 68 people lost their lives due to similar snow-related incidents, as per the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
