Corbyn and Sultana’s Tensions Surface Ahead of Party Conference
Jeremy Corbyn has refrained from characterising Zarah Sultana as a friend amid ongoing tensions within their newly formed political party, Your Party. As supporters gather in Liverpool for the inaugural conference, both co-founders have faced public disputes over the party’s direction and structure.
Public Clashes and Conference Challenges
In an interview with Sky News, Mr Corbyn acknowledged the “stresses and strains” surrounding the party’s establishment but expressed optimism that the situation had improved in recent days. Despite their collaboration, Corbyn and Ms Sultana, the Member of Parliament for Coventry South, have publicly disagreed about various aspects of the party’s launch. When asked about their friendship, Corbyn noted that they are “colleagues in parliament” and emphasized that they do maintain communication.
As the eve of the conference approached, the two co-founders appeared at different events, highlighting the growing divide between them. Ms Sultana had previously claimed she felt “sidelined” within a “sexist boys’ club” operating within the party, a statement Corbyn described as an “unfortunate choice of words.” He asserted that he had taken a more active role in organising the conference compared to Sultana.
Financial Issues and Leadership Choices
In addition to interpersonal disagreements, there are financial concerns as Your Party waits for Ms Sultana to transfer contributions she obtained from her supporters. Corbyn underscored the importance of having funds available at the start of the conference. While Sultana has assured that the donations will be sent in stages, the delay has not gone unnoticed.
As attendees prepare for the conference, supporters will have the opportunity to vote on one of four proposed names for the party: Your Party, Our Party, Popular Alliance, or For the Many. Notably, Ms Sultana’s preferred name, The Left, did not make it onto the ballot. Furthermore, while she advocated for a co-leadership model, members will only be able to choose between a single leadership approach or collective leadership.
Internal Conflicts and Member Expulsions
The upcoming gathering may also experience disruptions due to a series of member expulsions. One expelled member, Lewis Nielsen, alleged that a “clique” within the party was attempting a takeover. Sources indicate that these expulsions were linked to members associated with the Socialist Workers Party, as holding dual national party memberships is prohibited.
Sultana attributed the unrest to a “culture of paranoia at the top,” suggesting that individuals aligned with those who had been briefing against her were responsible for the expulsions. Corbyn is set to open the conference on Saturday, with key vote results scheduled to be announced the following day.
