Five individuals from Eastern Europe have received prison sentences for their involvement in a grooming gang that exploited teenage girls in Gateshead. Following an extensive trial at Newcastle Crown Court, the group was convicted of a series of heinous crimes that affected six young victims between 2014 and 2019.

The gang, comprising four Romanians and one Albanian, faced 31 charges related to the sexual abuse of girls aged 13 to 15. The court revealed that these young victims were sometimes coerced into consuming alcohol or cocaine, making them vulnerable to sexual exploitation.
During the trial, it was established that the girls were initially pursued by teenage boys who created a façade of relationships, only to have older men manipulate and abuse them. The offenders were sentenced on Friday, with prison terms ranging from 18 months to 14 years.

Judge Tim Gittins commended the courage of the victims for coming forward and highlighted the emotional toll the abuse has taken. One victim described her experience as haunting, expressing profound fear and uncertainty about her future. Another victim stated she felt naïve and easily influenced, enabling her exploitation.
Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Barr from Northumbria Police acknowledged the victims’ bravery and noted the complexity of the investigation, which revealed the depth of the offenses committed against these vulnerable minors.
Sentencing Outcomes
The following individuals received the following sentences:
- Bogdan Gugiuman, 44, was sentenced to 14 years for rape and drug supply.
- Codrin Dura, 27, received 13 years for multiple sexual offenses, including rape and child sexual exploitation.
- Leonard Paun, 23, was given a sentence of five years and one month for rape and related charges.
- Stefan Ciuraru, 22, faced 18 months in prison for four counts of sexual assault and other offenses.
- Klaudio Aleksiu, 28, was sentenced to six years for rape.
The judge clarified that the offenders’ nationality is irrelevant to their sentencing, emphasising that all five had arrived in the UK legally and had maintained their residency legitimately.
