King Charles III Cedar Trail Launched in Lebanon
The British Ambassador to Lebanon, Hamish Cowell, alongside Minister of Environment Tamara El Zein, officially launched the “King Charles III Cedar Trail” within the Shouf Biosphere Reserve. This eco-tourism and reforestation initiative aims to enhance environmental sustainability in Lebanon, celebrating the friendship between the UK and Lebanon.
A Symbol of Environmental Partnership
The Cedar Trail, inaugurated to commemorate King Charles III’s coronation in May 2023, features the planting of 96 cedar trees, a tribute to the UK-Lebanon bond. The project underscores the UK’s ongoing commitment to boosting Lebanon’s ecological resilience.
Significantly, the cedar tree is not only Lebanon’s national symbol but also represents strength and endurance, making it a focal point of this initiative. The trail spans an elevation range of 1,300 to 1,800 metres and connects to the renowned Lebanon Mountain Trail, offering hikers a diverse ecological experience and a connection to Lebanon’s natural heritage.
Funding and Strategic Goals
This initiative is backed by the UK Government’s Climate Diplomacy Fund, which aims to foster global leadership in climate initiatives and assist partner nations in achieving sustainable energy objectives. In September, the UK also supported the rollout of Lebanon’s National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP 2025-2030), which sets a strategic framework for Lebanon’s renewable energy targets in the near future.
Continuing the Legacy of Environmental Initiatives
The King Charles III Cedar Trail builds upon the legacy of the Queen Elizabeth II Cedar Trail, which was initiated in 2016 with the planting of 90 cedar trees to honour the late Queen’s 90th birthday. In November 2022, another cedar tree was planted in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, furthering The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative.
