Man Arrested in Connection with Manchester Synagogue Attack
A 31-year-old man has been taken into custody at Manchester Airport as authorities continue their investigation into the recent terrorist attack at a local synagogue. Police report that he was detained upon arrival on an inbound flight, suspected of planning and instigating terrorist activities, bringing the total number of arrests linked to the incident to seven.
Details of the Attack
The assailant, Jihad al Shamie, perpetrated the attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall on 2 October. During the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur, he drove his vehicle into congregants and subsequently assaulted individuals with a knife, attempting to breach the synagogue.
Police officers, responding to the unfolding situation, confronted al Shamie as he approached them “aggressively,” armed with a knife and what was initially suspected to be an explosive device, which later turned out to be fake. Tragically, worshippers Melvin Cravitz, aged 66, and 53-year-old Adrian Daulby lost their lives in the attack. Witnesses described Mr Daulby as a “quiet hero” for his efforts to protect others by attempting to block the doors of the synagogue during the chaos.
An inquest at Manchester Coroner’s Court revealed that Mr Daulby died from a gunshot wound fired by police officers, while Mr Cravitz succumbed to multiple stab wounds inflicted by al Shamie. Additionally, three other men sustained serious injuries and required hospital treatment, two of whom have since been released.
