London’s Budget Scrutiny Reveals Significant Deficits
The Mayor of London oversees an extensive budget exceeding £21 billion, which is allocated across various bodies within the Greater London Authority (GLA). Recent scrutiny by the London Assembly Budget and Performance Committee has raised concerns regarding potential shortfalls and future financial plans.
Current Budget Shortfalls
The committee’s investigation has uncovered a budget gap of £19.2 million for the current fiscal year within the Mayor’s budget. Projections indicate that this shortfall is expected to escalate to £25.9 million by 2027-28, necessitating immediate attention from city officials.
Transport and Fares
As part of the ongoing discussions, it has been confirmed that government-regulated fares will remain unchanged, while Transport for London (TfL) fares are set to increase by 5.8% in March 2026. Additionally, bus and tram fares will stay frozen until July 2026. The financial implications of these fare adjustments are not yet fully understood, raising further questions about their funding and potential costs.
Metropolitan Police Funding Challenges
In another critical area, the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is facing a sharp decline in officer numbers, projected to fall to 31,258 by the 2026-27 budget cycle. To mitigate financial constraints, the MPS plans to identify £20 million in “non-workforce efficiencies,” underlining the significant challenges confronting law enforcement budgeting in the capital.
Upcoming Assembly Meeting
To further investigate these issues, the London Assembly Budget and Performance Committee will convene tomorrow. They will question GLA officers regarding the formulation processes behind the Mayor’s draft budget for 2026-27. The session promises to provide transparency on how budgetary decisions are made and what they mean for Londoners.
