Major Crackdown on Illicit Medicines Sees Nearly £45 Million Worth of Seizures
A significant operation by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), in collaboration with law enforcement, has led to the seizure of nearly 20 million doses of unlawfully traded medications, valued at approximately £45 million during 2025. Among the confiscated products were nearly ten million doses of sedatives and sleep aids, over four million doses of potent pain relief medications, and a similar number of erectile dysfunction treatments. Disrupting Online Sales
Efforts to combat the online sale of illegal medications have intensified. The MHRA worked closely with internet service providers to shut down over 1,500 websites and social media accounts involved in the illegal trade of healthcare products. The agency also successfully removed more than 1,200 posts from social media platforms promoting these products.
Innovative AI Solutions
In a bid to further bolster its enforcement capability, the MHRA developed a pioneering AI algorithm in collaboration with eBay. This advanced technology identified and blocked more than two million violations related to the sale of prescription-only and non-compliant over-the-counter medicines, preventing them from reaching potential buyers.
