Tragedy Unfolds Off East Yorkshire Coast
A 45-year-old mother has tragically passed away, and efforts continue to locate her 15-year-old daughter who remains unaccounted for after an incident in the sea near Withernsea. The body of Sarah Keeling was retrieved from the water late on Friday evening, while the search for her daughter, Grace, is still ongoing.
Rescue Attempts and Casualties
Humberside Police confirmed that Sarah Keeling’s body was found during rescue operations meant for her and her daughter. Mark Ratcliffe, a 67-year-old man who attempted to save the pair, also lost his life during the rescue efforts. His family has paid tribute to him, referring to him as a “true selfless hero” whose kindness touched many lives.
In their emotional statement, Ratcliffe’s family expressed their sorrow, saying, “So many lives are now shattered that you’re gone… and we will all miss you forever.”
Search Operations in Challenging Conditions
The alarm was raised shortly after 3pm on Friday when it was reported that three individuals were struggling in the sea. A comprehensive rescue operation was initiated, involving local coastguard units, RNLI rescue teams, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, an air ambulance, Humberside Police, and Humberside Fire and Rescue.
The RNLI reported that the search was complicated by “extremely difficult” conditions, including 3-meter waves, strong winds, and freezing air temperatures. Over the weekend, temperatures in the seaside area dipped below freezing, causing additional challenges for the rescuers.
