Hinkley Point B Achieves Fuel-Free Status Ahead of Schedule
The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has confirmed that Hinkley Point B, a nuclear power station located in Somerset, is now officially free of fuel. This is a significant milestone, as the defueling process has been completed both on schedule and within budget.
Significant Milestone for Nuclear Decommissioning
This event marks the second successful fuel-free verification for an Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR) station this year. In total, seven stations will be transitioning from EDF Energy to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) for decommissioning, highlighting a crucial phase in the UK’s energy landscape.
Successful Defueling Process
Over the past three years, more than 4,900 spent fuel elements have been systematically removed from the site. These elements were carefully packaged into specially designed transport flasks and then transported by rail to Sellafield, where they will be stored safely.
David Peattie, CEO of the NDA, expressed his pride in the collaboration between EDF and the NDA group. He noted the effort’s success and highlighted the dedication of the Hinkley Point B team in achieving this milestone. “This accomplishment affirms our capabilities and the government’s trust in us to broaden our mission,” he stated.
Future Steps for Hinkley Point B
Both Sellafield and Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS), part of the NDA group, will play critical roles in the forthcoming decommissioning process. Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS) is also included in this collaboration and will take responsibility for Hinkley Point B’s decommissioning once it officially transfers to the NDA in 2026.
This achievement follows similar success at Hunterston B earlier this year, which was also defueled according to schedule and budget, demonstrating a growing efficiency in the UK’s approach to nuclear power decommissioning.
Rob Fletcher, CEO of NRS, congratulated all involved in reaching this significant milestone. He emphasized the strong working relationship formed with the Hinkley Point B team during the defueling process and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring a smooth transition into the decommissioning phase.
Contextual Significance
The NDA is tasked with safely decommissioning the UK’s earliest nuclear facilities, which entails mitigating risks and hazards associated with these sites. This crucial step is part of a broader initiative aimed at preparing these locations for potential future uses.
The transition of Hunterston B to the NDA is scheduled for 2026, with Hinkley Point B following later that same year. The other AGR stations set to undergo similar processes include Dungeness B, Hartlepool, Heysham 1, Heysham 2, and Torness.
